Change Ahead for South Sheffield Partnership

In response to the changing landscape of community engagement and funding for the voluntary and community sector in Sheffield, the Partnership is preparing for major changes. An Options Appraisal was commissioned in October to examine ways in which partners could continue to work together for the benefit of communities in South Sheffield.

In light of the fact that:

  • Funding for partnership working is growing increasingly scarce
  • New city structures including the Community Assemblies will mean forums and other community groups in South Sheffield will need to forge new alliances on new boundaries, as well as maintain their existing links with South Sheffield partners.

The Partnership has always embraced the need to change its structure according to its evolving function. Up until 2005, the Partnership was an informal network of forums working together with staffing support provided through Manor and castle Development Trust and other members.

In 2005, the need to directly hold contracts and employ staff led the partnership to incorporate as an independent Company limited by guarantee.

These needs are now changing again, and it is clear that the company status is no longer the most appropriate structure. Directors are therefore calling an extraordinary meeting to propose that the company is dissolved.

This will leave the partners better able to focus on working together and providing a strong collective voice for communities in need.

Maxine Greaves, Vice Chair, said "We need to focus on how to carry on the network and embed and progress the good work which has been achieved."

Jane Tanser, who is the Company Secretary, emphasised the role of partnership working in empowering the weaker communities: "Some kind of partnership network will be needed to protect the voice of those communities who are less well provided for"

"Co-operation has been essential," commented Ken Curran, who is a founder Director and chairs Manor Assembly and Manor and Castle Development Trust. "We wish to continue to meet together as frequently as necessary, in order that the benefits of mutuality are retained."

The commitment to ongoing partnership work was also echoed in our end of year Members' Conference (details below) and summed up by Linsey Taylor Auad who commented that "What we hope is that this will not be the end, but the beginning of a new phase."
